Christmassy Ideas #18 – Fold Flat Gift Bag

I have been making lots of gift bags recently and thought I would share them with you. These are easy to make and adding extra score lines can fold flat for storage. You can easily make gift bags with a complete 12 x 12 inches DSP without the cardstock but using cardstock makes them stronger. The checked red and blue ones were cased from Intatwyne Designs, The pink one I created the same way with different paper.

Finished bag is 6-1/4 x 6-1/4 x 2 inches

  • Cardstock
    • base – 2 pieces 8-1/4 x 8-3/4 inches, score on long side at 6-1/4, 8-1/4 inches; score on short side at 6-1/4 inches
      • if you want a fold flat bag on one piece (this will be back) on short side score at 5-1/4 inches; on long side score at 7-1/4 inches to the first score line; score in the rectangle to form a triangle
    • label – 2 x 4 inches (if using coloured cardstock another piece in Whisper White)
    • piece for 3 punched trees
  • DSP – 6 x 6 inches
  • Gold Foil for circle

Cut each piece as shown

For fold flat bag below shows how the back piece score lines should look

Adhere the DSP to the front and back of bag as shown

Add liquid glue to side tab, adhere to the other piece (straight side), add liquid glue to the other side tab and join the other side to form the bag. To form the base fold in back flap add liquid glue to the side flaps and adhere to the folded back flap, add liquid glue to the front flap and close the bottom of the bag. From the inside press down the base to ensure all are adhered. Fold the side score lines in order the bag to fold flat.

Punch ribbon holes approximately 3/4 inch down, in folded position can punch through all pieces. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon approximately 16 inches long and create the handles. To create the tree label, heat emboss the sentiment in white at the bottom of the coloured cardstock; punch the top on this and whisper white and adhere both pieces together. Heat emboss in white one tree image and punch in coloured cardstock (keep note which tree this is), punch two more trees, turn them over and heat emboss image in white. You may be asking why this is because the tree punch is not symmetrical and by doing this pieces will match up when adhered. Score each tree centrally from top to bottom, fold and burnish. Using liquid glue adhere the two trees to each side of the one tree, die cut the gold foil circle and adhere the tree to the circle. Thread bell onto twine, and through the label and tie onto the ribbon.

The pink bag used Feels Like Frost DSP (foil side), co-ordinating ink to match cardstock was added using a brayer. Label created the same size using the opposite foil side, with matching ink, added to matching cardstock and is threaded through the ribbon handles before it is secured.

Thank you for looking and hope you enjoyed this project. The supplies are listed below and linked to the online store, I would love to be your demonstrator if you are interested please contact me.
